Joseph Braiden RIP ( Written by Junior McKiernan)

Joseph Braiden better known locally as Joe died 28th December 2018.

Joe was a family man first and foremost, a devoted husband , loving father, grandfather and father in law.

Joe grew up on Main St, along with his brothers Gerald and Fergus and sister Sheila where his father John -Joe (RIP) and mother Maura (RIP) ran a thriving grocery shop. He played underage football with Killeshandra GAA club and also was an active participant in Killeshandra Top of the Town variety shows in the 1970’s

The family then purchased Cartown House in Carrick on Shannon and were absent from the community for several years but the family maintained its contact with Killeshandra and returned to live in the area at a later date.

On returning to Killeshandra Joe got involved with many local organisations and was generous with his time within many areas of the community in which he lived.

He was a referee with Cavan County Board for several years and was widely known and respected by clubs and officials throughout the county.

He held officer positions in several capacities within his beloved Killeshandra Leaguers, first as assistant secretary and a member of the Packie Devlin park development committee in 1982 , he was secretary for the years 1995 and 1996, he then took over the position of Chairman for two years 2013 and 2014. Joe was particularly thrilled when the club gained promotion to Senior Division 1 and won the County intermediate league and championship double in 2013 when he was chairman of the Club.

He was very active at all levels in the club at this time and was seldom out of the field.

He was involved in the local St. Brigid’s Church as a volunteer and participant. He was a Minister of the Eucharist, something he counted both a privilege and honour to do as his religion was a fundamental part of his life and he was also a member of the Church choir.

Joe was a very enthusiastic Glasgow Celtic F.C. supporter and was a member of the local Celtic supporters club. He travelled over many times to see them play at Parkhead and could be often spotted in his cherished Celtic jersey.

He was a valued volunteer with the community centre on bingo nights and was to be seen in all weathers helping with the parking.

He was a person that loved having a chat and could often be seen talking to people along the road whilst walking from his home in the Bawn to the town or when out walking the family dog.

The huge crowd at his funeral was testament to the respect in which he was held by the community and wider afield. Guards of honour from The Leaguers GFC, Referees and County Board officials lined the entrance to the church.

Joe died peacefully surrounded by his family at his residence Bawn Killeshandra ,Co. Cavan after a short illness aged 64.

With Joe’s passing the community has lost a valued and much respected member.

Deepest sympathies are extended to his wife Patricia, sons Ronan, Kelan and Enda, daughters Ailish and Orla, granddaughter Croiagh ,daughter-in-law Anna, brothers Gerald and Fergus, sister Sheila, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law , nephews , nieces ,relatives and friends.

Ar Dheis De go raibh a anam.
